Catholic Poets & Writers - helping you to give your best to God

Welcome to this resource for Christian poets & writers -- not an organization but a vision expressing faith in God, communicating biblical values, and embracing the rich heritage we have in the traditions, wisdom, and early Christian writings preserved for us by the Roman Catholic Church.

If you’re a Roman Catholic poet, Catholic writer, or Catholic editor, you might be having trouble finding writing help with your unique needs in mind or spirit. This might also be true if you’re a Christian who sees the Catholic Church (catholic meaning universal) as the empowered body of Jesus Christ on earth. Either way, rejoice! Within these pages, you’ll find many helps for writing, editing, and revising that encourage you to speak well for Christ, Christianity, and the Church.

To invite accuracy and insight into your Christian writing project, start with prayer, The Bible, Research, and the Catechism. If you can’t decide which translation of the Bible to use, you might just need more information, so that’s also been provided. See, too, a brief introduction to the Saints, who may remind you (as this website can do) that you’re not alone in what sometimes seems to be a solitary task. To aid your work beyond these pages, hotlinks to other writing resources have also been provided.

For long projects, The Write Plan on this site can save you time and frustration as you outline your nonfiction book or write a synopsis of your novel. You’ll also find writing help for Writing Well, Writing Poetry, and improving Nonfiction and Fiction Writing. As your work proceeds, Biblical Poetry and Poems to Study may inspire you to include poetic techniques in your poems, but in your fiction and nonfiction too. To amplify your poetic voice even more, the Poetry Course page introduces you to Poetry: Taking Its Course.

The author of that book, Mary Harwell Sayler, is also the Christian poet, freelancer, writing instructor, and lifelong Bible student who hopes to help other Catholic poets, Catholic writers, and Catholic editors through this website. To get acquainted, see her Bio. To get in touch, the Contact page has the current mail and email addresses.

As a well-published religious writer and instructor of poetry and writing for over 25 years, Mary will offer practical ideas to help you with a specific poem or manuscript but also to help you improve your writing in general. For instance, her critique may point out (kindly, of course!) a weak area such as poor grammar, fuzzy logic, or a sagging plot. She will also offer problem-solving suggestions and an objective view of your poems or manuscripts. However, her personal goals are to encourage your God-given talent and help you to find your unique voice to honor God, upbuild the Church, have fun in your work, and keep on writing. So come on in! Browse a bit. And may God bless, guide, and empower your Christian writing life.

Catholic Poet, Catholic Writer:

Are you ready to seek publication or expand into a new writing genre? If so the professional critique service offers an objective evaluation of your manuscript, including its reader appeal and market potential. When you submit your nonfiction, fiction, or poetry for a critique, mention any published works you have but, especially, tell about the direction you believe God wants your writing to take. Clarify, too, whether you’re a Catholic writer who wants to help readers better understand and value Church teaching or a catholic writer who’s interested in ecumenical writing projects.

Catholic Editor, Catholic Publisher:

The various types of writing help on this website primarily have in mind Catholic writers and Catholic poets at different levels of professionalism. However, you’re invited too! Please let me know what you most want to see in a book proposal, Bible story, article, or poem. Contact me also with your requirements for assignment writers and tell me about writing projects that need a freelance writer or freelance editor. For temporary help with an editorial task, see critique service or email me to discuss your immediate and long-range editorial or publishing needs.

Love, Truth, Beauty

In writing for Catholic readers or writing about Catholicism, you surely know the importance of expressing well the love of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and also of communicating the love of Mary and the Church. Similarly, the need for truth from God’s perspective is also an obvious requirement for writing well. But what about beauty? Does your writing actually need beautiful words or thoughts? For an enlightening discussion on the subject, see this article on the Internet. Then come on back to this site for additional help on writing well.
